"Unsurpassed Perfection"

Weatherstrip Application Tips
by Press Kale

Notes from a tech session at the Reno Nevada -National HET Meet

  • Use 3M Weatherstrip Cement.
  • Put it on both surfaces.
  • Apply the strip when your finger will not stick to the cement. Use an acid brush to apply it to the metal.
  • Put a bead of cement down the middle of the weatherstrip and use the side of the nozzle to spread it.
  • Clean up with acetone.
  • During application, push toward the start of the strip. Do not pull.
  • All rubber will shrink, so cut it longer (1/8”) and slightly compress it.
  • Use Lock-tite (Quick-tite) for the butt splice.
  •  Apply during a warm, dry day.
  •  Do the whole strip on at once.
  • Use adhesive sparingly.
  • Clean the rubber with detergent.
  • After the door seal replacement, the door will be tight to close. Put it out in the sun to set up the rubber.
  • Close the door on a piece of paper to check the seal.
  • During gasket replacement on the rear quarter windows, mark the spline lock with a file to help get it back in properly.
  • Cut rubber with GOOD scissors.
  • On a 4-door model, some areas are pretty thin, so trim with scissors.

Stepdown Transmission Floor Covers Explained

The transmission floor cover was the same from 1948-1950. Starting in 1951, the transmission floor cover was changed for Long Wheel Base Hudsons to allow for a new Hydramatic transmission. All cars from then on had that floor cover Hydramatic or 3 speed-it didn't matter.  I.E.  You can install a 51-floor transmission cover on a 48 with a 3-speed transmission but you can't use a 48 trans cover on a 52 with a Hydramatic.
